5 hair care tips for gorgeous hair over 30
A year ago
We asked the Nut and Noggin team, who've been writing about beauty for over 40 years, about their top tips for looking after our hair as we age...
1. Look for ph balanced products
As we age, hair can start to look and feel less thick and heathy. Looking after your scalp - where your hair follicle grows from - can really help.
Tip: Make sure your hair products are ph balanced to your skin, as massaging a neutral shampoo or shampoo bar into your scalp will stimulate production of new hair growth, whilst caring for the soft skin on your scalp.
2. Low heat drying
If you want to avoid frizz, set your hairdryer and styling tools on a lower heat. Giving yourself a bit longer to style your locks will mean less frizz, less split ends and less long term damage. You can also try a heat protective spray before you dry for maximum protection.
3. Use a mask once a week
In addition to your hair wash routine, add in a restorative mask once a week. If you colour your hair or have curly hair, it can be prone to dryness - a mask will help keep it in tip top shape. We like Olaplex's mask.
4. Use a sulphate free shampoo
Avoiding SLS (Sodium Laureth Sulphate) in your shampoo and shampoo bars will avoid stripping your hair of its natural oils. There are lots of SLS-free shampoos and more eco friendly shampoo bars out there now. If you’d like to try a sulphate free shampoo bar, Nut and Noggin’s is SLS free and uses a gentle coconut based cleanser.
5. Keep your stylist involved
Having a regular haircut goes without saying to maintain hair strength and condition. Next time you visit your hair stylist, don't forget to ask them what products they’d recommend for your hair type.
Often, a small amount of styling product goes a long way and can keep your hair behaving all day! A bit of hairspray or mousse or cream can make a huge difference.

For curly hair I have to keep my locks nourished so leave my conditioner on for as long as possible while I shower and wash it off over the bath 5 minutes later!
