Beauty insiders launch vegan, plastic free shampoo brand

A new shampoo bar brand aimed at reducing the estimated 17million* plastic shampoo bottles we waste in the UK each year launches this week.

Led by two beauty industry insiders, Nut and Noggin uses vegan ingredients and gives back to charities helping young people facing mental health challenges with every sale.

According to co-founder and former beauty PR Rachel Clark, who lives near York: “We went to visit manufacturers with our ideas and couldn’t get over how much plastic is used by hair brands.

“We also realised that many shampoos are imported from as far away as the USA, France and New Zealand. We wanted to make Nut and Noggin shampoo bars in England, so that’s what we’re doing.

“Many shampoo bars out there contain sulphates and strong scents that don’t smell natural at all. Our first shampoo bar has a gentle pomegranate and mint scent and uses only clean ingredients, like no sulphates, that can really dry out your hair.

"We’re on a mission to get everyone using plastic free haircare, so we’re using 100% recyclable packaging to avoid plastic entirely.

“We know if we want to get women to make the switch away from plastic bottles, we can’t compromise on effectiveness, so we’ve formulated a bar that works to give customers soft, shiny hair. Initially we’re selling online and on Instagram @nutandnoggin. We're bypassing traditional retailers and expensive advertising, speaking to our customers directly on social media to co-create a new kind of haircare brand.”

Nut and Noggin’s first launch is a pomegranate and mint scented bar with artisan brewed beer and organic flaxseed oil. It includes:

  • A moisture rich formula with coconut and organic flax seed oils to hydrate and nourish.
  • Ph balanced formulation is ultra mild for hair and scalp.
  • Unique shape avoids mush - store on its end day from water in between washes - no messy tins needed!
  • Ideal for the gym and for travelling - no liquids.
  • Nut and Noggin’s 150g shampoo bar lasts twice as long as a regular shampoo and is priced at £15 plus p&p.

*Estimates for 2017 show that shampoos manufactured reached an overall sales value of £139million (Statista research department 2017 Sep 27 2017 statista.com) - if we average that by £8 per bottle = 17.3M plastic shampoo bottles every year!
